In a landmark move towards gender-inclusive mobility, the West Bengal government has introduced free travel for women on all state-run buses across the state. The initiative seeks to reduce the financial burden of daily commuting while enhancing womenβs access to education, employment, healthcare, and other essential services. This scheme is expected to strengthen womenβs economic participation, promote independence, and contribute to greater gender equality in public spaces.
At a press conference held at the Press Club, Kolkata, representatives of the organisations said the policy, which came into effect on June 1 , 2026 marks the culmination of more than a decade of advocacy aimed at making public transportation more affordable and accessible for women. Welcoming the implementation of the scheme , Rekha Mody – Founder of Stree Shakti described free bus travel as a transformative initiative that particularly benefits women from economically weaker sections by reducing transportation costs and enhancing their independence.
