She is an archetype of human spirit, a testament to the power of unwavering determination, and an inspiration for generations to come.

It’s the story of Sheetal Devi, a para-archer who, against all odds, has carved her name onto the archery range.

The recent highlight of the Golden Girl of India, Sheetal Devi being honored with the Arjuna Award from the President of India, Droupadi Murmu speaks volumes about the Women Strength she uploads.

Sheetal was born without arms because of a condition called Phocomelia, a congenital limb impairment, Sheetal’s childhood was painted with challenges. Yet, her inherent spark refused to be dimmed. At 15, she stumbled upon archery, its precision and focus resonating with her indomitable spirit. It was in this sport that she found her wings, a platform to not just defy limitations but soar beyond them.

Embracing the bow and arrow, Sheetal embarked on a journey fraught with hurdles. Access to facilities and equipment was scarce, the terrain unforgiving. But her will was ironclad. Broken arrows were mended with makeshift tools, each shot a testament to her unwavering pursuit of excellence.

Her dedication bore fruit. In 2017, Sheetal bagged her first gold at the National Para-Archery Championships, the taste of victory washing away years of hardship. This was just the beginning. National podium finishes became a recurring theme, her name echoing through tournaments held across the country.

In 2019, she reached new heights, clinching a silver medal at the Asia Oceania Para-Archery Championships in Bangkok. The international stage beckoned, and Sheetal answered with unwavering focus. Her unwavering spirit and relentless practice earned her a place in the Indian contingent for the Tokyo Paralympics 2020.

“She had no idea what archery was,” the coach recalled. “I told her to come here and train with me, and she never looked back. I told her that I could help her become an international medallist, but she had to work hard. She worked very, very hard.”

Standing tall amidst the global elite, Sheetal’s performance at the Paralympics was an embodiment of grace under pressure. Though she narrowly missed a podium finish, her spirit soared, inspiring countless others back home in Kishtwar.

Sheetal Devi won a record three medals at her maiden Asian Para Games in Hangzhou in October this year. The impressive haul included two gold medals in mixed doubles and women’s individual category, and a silver in women’s doubles compound.
